The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

Based only 7 miles down the road at RAF Coningsby, the Battle of Britain Memorial flight operates one of only two Lancasters still flying (the other is in Canada), together with six Spitfires, two Hurraicanes and a Dakota. There is a Visitors Centre that runs guided tours of the hangar throughout the year. We are lucky enough to get regular sightings of the fantastic aircraft flying overhead between May and September so listen out for the unmistakable sound of the Lancasters engines during your stay!

RAF Coningsby

RAF Coningsby was built just before World War Two and became the home of 617 Squadron (known as the Dambusters) during the second half of the war. Later, it was the base for the Vulcan bomber. Now its home to two squadrons of Typhoon fighters. There are viewing areas where you can watch the jets take off and land and you may even see the Lancaster, Spitfires or Hurricanes.

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre

This is a very interesting museum on the site of an original World War 2 airfield and amongst the attractions is “Just Jane”, a Lancaster Bomber that you can actually ride in. It’s not airworthy although it’s undergoing a programme of restoration with the aim of it returning to flight. Currently it performs taxi runs and these can be booked on the web site. They also run an annual air show together with other events throughout the year.
